works by Villa Lobos, Brouwer, and Jobim., also includes songs from Japan and

2009 was a typically
eclectic year for guitarist KimRockell. His musical
appearances included a guitar and didgeridoo performance with Rodney
Bocshman, a member of the Aboriginal ‘stolen generation’ at the Indij-in-arts
Gallery in Brisbane, two supper-shows with Bossa Nova Singer Harumi in
Tokyo and the premier of Waltz for Mrs K for guitar and orchestra by
Christchurch based composer Ian Bolton.
As well as solo recitals,
Kim’s performance background as a classical guitarist includes
appearances on ABC television with counter-tenor Andrew Dalton,
performances with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and sharing the
stage with popular guitarist Phil Emmanuel. Kim was a finalist in the
Australian Classical Guitar Competition and has toured Queensland
performing a series of duo recitals for guitar and cello. After
travelling to Spain, where he took lessons in Flamenco guitar, Kim’s
musical adventures took him to Asia. Kim has frequently visited Taiwan
where he has appeared on television several times, and performed with
bands in a variety of genres. He has also conducted children’s music
workshops, and participated in traditional music making with Taiwanese
aboriginal performers.
In Manila Kim visited
Folk-singer Freddie Aguilar at his Ka-Freddie music lounge in Tagaytay
and performed his versions of Freddie’s well known songs. He was also a
guest at La Salle school where he gave a number of performances for
students. While in Japan Kim focussed on producing an instructional DVD
for Japanese classical guitarists ‘A guitarists English Masterclass’. He
became increasingly interested in Japanese folk music, sang traditional
enka at the Ebetsu matsuri, performed classical guitar at
soirees, and maintained a regular gig at La Playa in Sapporo,
Hokkaido.
